About Johanna

Johanna Courtleigh, MA, Licensed Professional Counselor, expert in Building Confidence and Self-Esteem, and Resolving Conflict, Depression, Anxiety, Stress and Eating DisordersI have been a licensed therapist in private practice since 1991, a certified Hypnotherapist since 1988 and working in the helping professions for over thirty years, serving clients locally and internationally.

Beyond my formal therapeutic training, I am also a Certified Confidence Coach and a Certified Hypnotherapist and HypnoFertility® (Fertility by Hypnosis) Therapist at Portland HypnoFertility.

I have had training in The Work of Byron Katie, both practice and teach Meditation, and have trained in Regression Therapy with Dr. Brian Weiss.

I am also a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator-Candidate (CDWF-Candidate). The The Daring Way™ is a highly experiential methodology based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown.  The method was developed to help men, women and adolescents learn how to show up, be seen, and live braver lives.  The primary focus is on developing shame resilience skills and developing a courage practice that transforms the way we live, love, parent, and lead. It can be facilitated in clinical, educational, and professional settings and is suitable for work with individuals, couples, families, work teams and organizational leaders.  Further information is available at thedaringway.com.

As well, I am a non-denominationally ordained Minister through The Association For The Integration Of The Whole Person, in California.

In 2010, I attended the Oneness University in India, a beautiful international spiritual school, and became certified as a trainer in a profound course in personal/spiritual growth and development, which I now offer several times a year.

I returned there in 2012–and again in 2013 and 2015.  In 2013, at an intensive 30-day program, I went through an Awakening process.  I have moved into a place of much deeper and more consistent happiness and peace.  I feel it’s important to integrate spiritual growth into the healing process of therapy–non-denominationally, and in a way that best supports you and reflects your beliefs, goals and traditions.

I also write and am a published author. (Please see publications page.)

Although I’ve never lived your life, I’ve certainly had my share of challenges, sorrows and unexpected transitions.

Beyond my education and training, the work I’ve done on myself to become happier and healthier is truly what has allowed me to become a competent, successful therapist. My spiritual practice and continually growing reverence for life, and myself, have deeply contributed to this sense of well-being. I bring this as a core foundational piece to my work.

I know how to walk through the twisted woods of life and am grateful to have found a place of deeper self-love, inner quietness and peace.

That doesn’t mean I don’t still experience the full range of human emotions. I do. And sometimes they’re challenging. But I am better and better able to meet the difficult feeling states with care and compassion for myself. I have learned to question and shift away from the thinking that creates depression and distress.  And to call on something higher than my mind, for love and support and guidance.

I have a happier, healthier relationship with my own mind—and thus, with everyone else in my life!—so that my thinking has become more a tool than a vehicle that drives me into suffering.

I have had the privilege of studying with some remarkable teachers including Dr. Brené Brown, Marianne Williamson, Ram Dass, Thich Nhat Hahn, Steven Levine, Jack Kornfield, Matt Kahn, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, as well as Byron Katie and Dr. Brian Weiss.  The ‘dasas’–male and female monks and teachers–at the Oneness University are some of those I most deeply respect.

It is my deepest pleasure to support people through the challenges and triumphs of their transitions, and help them use their crises as opportunities to grow, heal and become happier. This, to me, is the true definition of Unconditional Love. Love as a state of Being, generated from within, versus dependent on an other to experience.
